An Introduction to the Autistic Women’s Empowerment Project.

The Autistic Women’s Empowerment Project is a user-led network for Autistic and Neuro-Divergent Women and Girls. We were founded in Jan 2014 as an awareness and self-advocacy project by women who are all "experts by experience"  between us do all we can to ensure that the rights of autistic women are recognised and upheld. This is a major issue we are tackling and we are connecting with women around the UK to get our voices heard.

We are based in North Wales and have developed a local network of women who have a diagnosis or are waiting for an assessment of an Autism Spectrum or related neuro-developmental condition or social and communication challenges and the mothers of girls diagnosed or awaiting assessment.

We are a true grassroots disabled peoples group run by volunteers and focused on user-led peer to peer support. We are more than just a group who meets for tea and a chat. We are a peer support circle. We support each other as a community and can signpost to further support across the North Wales region.

We are becoming a group of very diverse women from all walks of life. We all have different talents some of us are listeners, some of us are advocates and some of us are campaigners. Others raise awareness through their creative work and we are proud to have connected with many wonderful artist’s poets and musicians.

As a network, we are very aware of how difficult it can be to access a diagnosis and just how stressful the process can be and so have developed a network that can help support women and girls. We are not afraid to talk about the issues that society sweeps under the carpet.

We have come together for one reason and that is to empower all autistic women.
